Campus Sustainability Week

Next week will be a very busy week on the Lynchburg College campus. Not only will the annual Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week committee be sponsoring numerous events, the Natural Resource Committee will be hosting LC’s first annual Campus Sustainability Week with the theme “Hornets Go Green.” The idea is to spark an interest in sustainability campus wide.

Below is an outline of events during Campus Sustainability Week:

Monday, November 5

4:30 p.m. Local environmentalist Joy Truskowski will be showing her film, Seeking the Good Life in America. The film explores the daily life of individuals who live in intentional communities. The viewing will be held in Hopwood Auditorium. Check out the trailer.

8 p.m. Following Joy’s film, she will be joined by fellow musicians for a concert in Sydnor Performance Hall. You can check out Joy’s music before the concert.

Tuesday, November 6

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Green Thumb Alliance will be hosting a rain barrel painting session. The rain barrels are attached to the Garden House and provide all of the water needed for the garden. Currently the barrels are nothing special to look at (white and plastic). Colorful paint will liven the barrels up and provide some color to the exterior of the Garden House. The session will be held in front of Schewel Hall. Everyone is invited to add his or her artistic touch to the rain barrels.

Wednesday, November 7

At 4:30 p.m. the film Green Fire will be shown in Schewel 232. The film explores the life of environmentalist Aldo Leopold and his philosophies on land use, environmental ethics, and much more. Learn more about Green Fire.

Thursday, November 8

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week will be hosting a used clothing drive (all day). Recycling is a key component to sustainability, so the NRC encourages students and faculty to donate gently used clothing.

Friday, November 9

Join Dr. Laura Henry-Stone for a Green Yoga session – yoga with a hint of nature. The session will be held at Beaver Point from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

From 1-3 p.m. please bring a personal reusable cup for free hot chocolate. The hot chocolate table will be located in front of Schewel.

During the week attendees are asked to pick-up a “sustainability card.” At each event a Campus Sustainability rep will check the card off. Students and faculty who attend at least three events will receive a free “Hornets Go Green” koozie. Eligible individuals can pick their koozie up from the hot chocolate table on Friday.
